I remember stepping into my car on September 11, 2001, blissfully unaware that terrorism had descended on everyone’s world in the most tragic circumstances. Why? Because I hadn’t read the paper, turned on the radio or computer, or for that matter spoken to someone who had.
Ignorance is bliss. Our day begins and ends with news. It can be political, horrific, uplifting or just plain weird. It’s constantly happening and unless we are tuned in we are indifferent.
I turned on the computer this morning and in a one minute scan of Nine MSN, I had read about acid attacks, a mum cheering her five year old son to drink liquor shots, and a grandma delighted by the birth of her 10 year old grand daughter’s baby to a thirteen year old boy. Now that’s life changing stuff.
The Herald-Sun targeted greedy banks and Brendon Fevola revving up. The Age went international on its cover page and discussed the rising ‘Tea Party’ republican star in the USA. It also had a dig at the Big Four* banks.
But news doesn’t have to be from a major medium or the social networking sites, it can come from the mouths of our children, our partners and ourselves.
My headlines of the day would have read:
Mum Bows to Pressure to Cook a Dog Bowl Birthday Cake
Child Refuses to Brush Hair Again
Dad Cuts Out Record Number of Dog Paws
Boy Bats in First Cricket Training Session
Mum and Daughter Costume Makers - Furever Friends
Synthetic Dog Fur Blankets Master Bedroom
Lawns Looking Schmicko for Arrival of 20 Children
Mum Types up Kinder Correspondence 10 Minutes before Meeting
Rissoles on the Menu – Master Chef Disgusted
Sleep Deprived Mum Bags Her Last Bones
If you have no idea what I am talking about, you’ll have to read tomorrow’s blog and all will become apparent.
Stop Press.
* Big Four banks - ANZ, Commonwealth, Westpac and NAB - have the monopoly in the mortgage lending market.
